Meet Darren Peters – Leading the Charge in Conservation at Trapinator
Welcome to Trapinator, where we go beyond manufacturing traps; we are your dedicated partners in wildlife conservation. At the heart of our mission is Darren Peters, our esteemed Conservation Manager. With over 38 years of hands-on experience in predator control and wildlife preservation, Darren's leadership ensures that your conservation projects are in the best possible hands. A Legacy of Conservation Excellence
From the rugged landscapes of New Zealand to international conservation fronts, Darren Peters has been a trailblaser in wildlife protection and predator control. His journey began in 1984 with the New Zealand Wildlife Service, where he specialized in endangered species, playing a pivotal role in the Takahē and Kakapo programs in Fiordland and the Black Stilt program.
Pioneering Possum Control and Island Restoration
In the early 90s, Darren joined the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) in Coromandel. His innovative approach to possum control monitoring and best practices became a benchmark in the field. He led critical island eradications and re-introductions, restoring native habitats and protecting endangered species.
Breaking New Ground in Mainland Conservation
Darren's expertise expanded further in Gisborne, where he spearheaded island eradications on Motutapere and Whangaokeno Islands and conducted groundbreaking research in mainland island conservation and kiwi protection. His relentless pursuit of conservation excellence continued in Nelson Lakes National Park, managing the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project, one of New Zealand's premier mainland island projects. Here, he advanced research in stoat control, kaka protection, and possum management, contributing to significant ecological recovery.
National Leadership and Global Impact
From 2000 to 2020, Darren served as the Predator Control Technical Specialist at DOC's head office, where he developed national best practices for predator control. His work on stoat eradication on Chalky Island and large-scale kiwi zone management set new standards in conservation. Darren was instrumental in introducing DOC traps in the United Kingdom, holding pivotal meetings with staff at Defra (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs), which led to the approval under the Spring Trap Order Statutory Instruments 2018 No 1190. During this period, he was also responsible for deploying 20,000 DOC200 stainless traps on Orkney Island and part of the team developing DOC traps with Phil Waddington and the Trapinator Possum Trap, resulting in over 500,000 traps in New Zealand bush protecting birdlife. Darren's leadership extended to international projects, including rat eradications in South Georgia and Campbell Island.
Innovative Conservation Solutions
Darren's innovative spirit led him to Good Nature as Conservation Manager, where he continued to build relationships in Hawaii, Mauritius, and the Americas. His contributions to stoat control on Great Island and Capital Kiwi further solidified his reputation as a leader in the field.
Leading Trapinator’s Conservation Efforts
Now, at Trapinator, Darren continues to lead the charge in conservation innovation. Darren is deeply involved in Pacific Island eradication projects, including the ambitious Guam Brown Snake removal program, aiming to address the estimated 1-2 million snakes on the island.
